Numbers in the Fast Lane

From pit stops to data plots, let’s discover the maths and physics behind winning a Formula 1 Championship.

Using real-life race statistics, such as lap times, average speeds, and pit stop durations, pupils will have to make critical decisions based on data. Finally, their skills will be put to the test as they use their skills to drive their team to victory.

Target age: P5 to P7.

About the lesson

What happens in the lesson?

Using real-life race statistics, such as lap times, average speeds, and pit stop durations, pupils will have to make critical decisions based on data.

How does the car’s current speed affect the chances of overtaking?

Should you recommend a pit stop for a tire change?

Pupils get hands-on with some of the kinds of data that strategy engineers use. They test their maths skills with percentages, rates of change, division with remainders, and you use probabilities to take calculated risks.

Interactive from start to end

We look at aerodynamics, sensors, tyre science and logistics. Just like professional strategy engineers, the classes have to weigh the data, debate the options, and agree on the best call.

It is a team sport.
