Special guest
But what’s behind a particular tartan? Who decides how a tartan is woven? What colours to include? How is it made?
We will be joined by special guests from Lochcarron of Scotland. With a heritage dating back to 1892, Lochcarron of Scotland is the world’s leading manufacturer of tartan.
They’ll give an insight into the origins of this iconic textile, and show us how it’s designed, dyed, woven, and tailored in the Scottish Borders today.
Tartan traditions
Tartan is for everyone
Traditionally, you’d pick a tartan based on your family, your clan. Your clan tartan would represent where you came from, what family you belong to.
Today, there’s thousands of tartans representing all sorts of groups and interests. Football teams, companies, and even Shrek have their own tartans. Anyone can design their own tartan, and anyone can wear tartan. It’s for everyone.

Designing your own tartan
When you design your tartan, you’ll think about what groups you identify with, or belong to. You’ll pick colours that represent your group, and edit code to tweak your tartan design.
Once you’re done, your tartan will be added to our Scottish Connections Tartan Gallery for other learners around the world to see your tartan, and hear your story.
